Tanga Suites is a furnished apartment on Riverside Gardens Road, off Riverside Drive in Nairobi. It has its own wooden door off a covered walkway, and a garden beyond the railing. It is set up for either pace: a few nights when you need a calm base in the city, or a calendar month when you would rather live in an apartment than a hotel room.

The living room has a sofa, a television and room to sit. Through the arch, a dining table is laid for four. The kitchen has a fridge, a microwave, a sink and a hob, with a coffee maker beside the table, so the stay can be self-catering. The bedroom has a double bed, a wardrobe, and a desk if the longer stay includes work. The bathroom has a shower. Towels, bedding and Wi-Fi are provided.

The nightly rate is KSh 6,000. A month is priced when you enquire, because a longer stay is not simply the nightly figure multiplied out.

The neighbourhood

Riverside Drive is one of Nairobi’s more exclusive residential addresses: a leafy, lower-density stretch in the Westlands belt, between the city centre, Kileleshwa and Westlands proper. Embassies and quiet compounds sit along the drive. It is not a nightlife street. The point of the address is calm, and still being close to the city.

The CBD is about four to five kilometres away. By car that is often ten to fifteen minutes when the roads are clear, and longer in the evening rush. Westlands itself is closer, about five minutes. Sarit Centre and Westgate, the two main malls there, are a short drive, commonly five to ten minutes. ABC Place is on Waiyaki Way, the main road just north of Riverside. For everyday shopping, Kasuku Centre in neighbouring Kileleshwa is the nearer stop. Gigiri, the UN compound and Village Market are further, about fifteen minutes when traffic allows.
